Yesterday marked the start of this year's Banned Books Week (September 21 - 27). As libraries we are part of the literary community that maintains ideals of freedom to read and access to information. Some of our and our patron's favorties can be found on the list of Banned and Challenged Books: Harry Potter, Bone, Captain Underpants and even The Hunger Games. According to the official BBW site, "Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. More than 11,300 books have been challenged since 1982 according to the American Library Association. There were 307 challenges reported to the Office of Intellectual Freedom in 2013, and many more go unreported." Take a look at the sources below for more information on Banned Books Week!
