Youth Services Contact Update Form

The Youth Services Department at SCLS strives to keep communication with member libraries active and efficient. Please help us keep our contacts up to date by using the Youth Services Contact Update Form to notify us of name changes, e-mail address changes, position changes, and new librarians and staff in your department who wish to receive emails from the SCLS Youth Services Department. This form is located on the Youth Services page of The Gateway. Please fill it out and e-mail it to patty@suffolknet.org, or print out and send it to Patty Klos at SCLS-YS.

Card Your Baby Kits

Beginning in January 2014, the maternity wards in Suffolk County (Good Samaritan, Huntington Hospital, Peconic Bay Medical Center, St. Catherine’s Hospital, St. Charles Hospital, Southampton Hospital, and University Hospital at Stony Brook) began participating in the pilot “Card Your Baby” campaign targeting new parents and their babies. Parents can bring a coupon back to their local library for a “Card Your Baby Kit” and to see if their baby is eligible to receive a library card.

Libraries can also contact Patty Klos at patty@suffolknet.org to order kits ahead of time, if they wish. Libraries will be billed $3.50 per kit. Kits come in both English and Spanish!

Button Making System

SCLS Youth Services has three button-making systems to create 1″, 1.5″, and 2.25″ diameter buttons. Would you like to make buttons for your staff or patrons? First you need to prepare your art work/templates to fit the size you need. Take advantage of the Button Biz Design Center to help you prepare for making buttons. You can also view tutorials online for using the new systems. Then contact SCLS Youth Services to set up a time to use the button makers.

If you have 1”, 1.5”, or 2.25” button templates that you are willing to share with other libraries, or if you need more information, please contact Youth Services.

Ellison/AccuCut Dies

SCLS houses over 400 shape-cutting dies that staff of member libraries are welcome and encouraged to use. Place a hold and we'll send it to you in the system bag. To request a die in Sierra, search the title scls dies and place an Item-Level Hold on a specific die/barcode or contact Patty Klos (patty@suffolknet.org). Full instructions on placing a hold can be found on the Youth Services page of The Gateway. If your library doesn't have a die cutting machine, contact SCLS Youth Services to set up a time to come to SCLS to use our die cutting machines for large and jumbo dies.

So, by popular demand - I present to you: How to level and tag books in Encore! (we will also add this to the SCLS Resources tab for future reference)

-Once you find the exact title you want, open the link
-Under the "Request it" tab are 3 buttons that say "additional actions"
click on the +, then click on the icon of a tag

-Click submit
-Your tag may take up to an hour or so to appear before you can search for it

To Search for books in Encore:
