Acclaimed
illustrator, author, and teacher James McMullan on: LEAVING CHINA: An Artist
Paints His World War II Childhood (Algonquin Books, March 2014)
A
resident of Suffolk County for many years, Jim appears at the Amagansett Free
Library on Saturday, May 31, at 6 PM to discuss his graphic memoir. The Library
will also have 8 pieces of art from the book on display May 28-June
14. For more information, please contact Jeanne McDermott at 631-267-3810.
Jim's
artwork has appeared in magazines from New York Magazine to Sports
Illustrated, on Lincoln Center Theater posters, and in children's books
created in conjunction with his wife, Kate, such as the bestselling I STINK! He
is also an educator -- the developer of the High-Focus Drawing Program at
the School of Visual Arts and on the faculty at the Stony Brook Southampton
Creative Writing Program.
In
this poignant, unusual memoir featuring a series of illustrated vignettes, Jim
highlights his early years in China during the Japanese Occupation, the turmoil
within his own family, and the subsequent years of travel. Ultimately, what he
reveals are the pivotal moments that set him on the path to becoming an artist.
