Review: The White Book

It's all about imagination in this title from the new imprint of Candlewick Press, Minibombo Books! Our little painter looks up at the plain white wall and decides to roll some paint over the bland surface. Once some bright hues are thrown up on the wall white outlines of animals are discovered and come to life. With pink comes birds on a wire that fly away, a splash of blue reveals fish that swim with their school, green gives way to a gregarious dinosaur, all the way to orange where a new friend appears! This wordless picture book is full of surprises and may make you look at your walls differently. While it may not be perfect for a story time it is definitely a concept book that could have kids wondering what can be hiding in plain site!

According to the website, minibombo.com, "minibombo is an Italian children’s publishing house dedicated to creating innovative and interactive picture books for little children and the grown-ups who read along with them." The White Book and a second title, Black Cat, White Cat (which has its own surprise ending), are both due out on August 25th of this year. Two more titles are also marked as "coming soon" on their website.

Minibombo, which translates to "mini bumblebee", revels in simple designs and fun activities for readers to partake in like this one:

Both children and grown-ups will be immediately drawn to these simple, stylized characters and their charming stories. Go here for more activity ideas based on the books so you and your patrons can be busy little bumble bees!
